A small bed and breakfast on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, is holding its ground against a legal challenge from Airbnb, the San Francisco-based short-term rental giant, in a dispute centered on three letters: bnb.
The guesthouse, called bnb-side, operates out of just six rooms on the narrow limestone peninsula off the Dorset coast. Its name is a deliberate nod to b-side, a well-regarded local arts festival the accommodation was established to help sustain financially. The business has no ambitions beyond the island — yet it finds itself in the crosshairs of one of Silicon Valley's most valuable hospitality brands.

Airbnb, whose global platform lists millions of properties across nearly every country, has pursued a legal claim arguing that bnb-side's name threatens its trademark. The small guesthouse is pushing back, characterizing Airbnb's position as an attempt to monopolize common, descriptive language that has long been associated with the bed-and-breakfast industry broadly.
The owners of bnb-side have signaled they have no intention of yielding. The standoff illustrates a pattern seen across the global economy, in which large technology companies aggressively defend broad intellectual property claims against far smaller operators who lack comparable legal resources. Whether a trademark tribunal will side with a multibillion-dollar platform or a community-rooted guesthouse remains to be seen.
